Summary
A year after Javier Milei’s election as president, Argentina faces a new existential crisis. The populist president is shaking the very foundations of the country by seeking to rewrite the national narrative of the military dictatorship that ravaged Argentina from 1976 to 1983. In a country where historical memory remains weakened by the deep wounds left by the dictatorship, this revisionism worries human rights defenders.
Yet the guardians of this memory are more vigilant than ever. A unique movement has emerged in Argentina: children of dictatorship torturers are standing up alongside victims to bring the truth to light and obtain justice.
Analía Kalinec founded the Historias Desobedientes movement to fight alongside the victims of the dictatorship. The daughter of a former policeman convicted of crimes against humanity, Analía is determined to preserve the memory of the victims and expose the individual responsibilities of the executioners.
Analía’s path crosses that of Ana María Careaga, kidnapped at the age of 16 while pregnant. She was tortured for four months by the regime’s forces. Among her torturers was Analía Kalinec’s father. United by memory and the quest for justice, they denounce the dangers of forgetting and remind us of the importance of preserving the historical truth to avoid the repetition of past atrocities.
Tatiana, a history student and student opposition figure, has also joined the struggle. She campaigns for memory and social rights, firmly opposing the Milei government’s perceived regressive measures and defending the rights of the dictatorship’s victims.
